Course Modalities

Courses at UCF are offered in various different “modalities.” The modality refers to how the course is delivered, such as face-to-face, fully-online, or through recorded video. We typically work with W and M modalities.

How do I find the modality of a course?

The best way to find the modality of a course is to search for the course in Redbeard. You can usually tell the modality of a course by looking at its name, though this format is not enforced.

Let’s take ENC1101-26Spring 0M01 as an example:

  • ENC1101 is the course prefix and number.
  • 26Spring is the semester in which this course was taught. In this case, Spring of 2026.
  • 0M01 identifies the modality as M (mixed-mode), and the section number as 01. There is often more than one section of a course taught in a given semester, so this number distinguishes between them.
    • If the first two digits are 00, then it’s probably a P (face-to-face or “In Person”) course.
    • If the first two digits are 0W, then it’s probably a W (fully-online or “Asynchronous Online”) course.

Modalities are sometimes removed, changed, or added. Review the current offerings on the Types of Courses at UCF page on the CDL website.

Keep in mind that we only serve faculty with courses that have a “DL Fee” (distance learning fee) attached.
