Performance and Promotion

Constant improvement is a huge part of the Techrangers, and we have set up two avenues for your progress to be recognized.

Performance Appraisals

The first is Performance Appraisals, which are held every 6 months so that we can regularly assess your performance and provide official feedback. Your first Performance Appraisal (PA) will be at 90 days from the start of your employment, and the rest will happen in March and September of each year.

The process will start when the Techrangers Lead sends you a meeting appointment, which will include your cohort lead. The Techrangers Lead will schedule this appointment during your work time, but if it happens to fall outside of work time or during a planned vacation, please let them know as soon as possible so they can reschedule.

During the meeting, there will be an open discussion about your performance, following along with the Performance Appraisal Rubric. Read through the rubric and prepare the following information:

  • Areas where you feel like you deserve an “Outstanding” rating.
  • Accomplishments from the last 6 months, such as awards, presentations, features/projects completed, and professional development completed.
  • Goals for the next 6 months. These can be hard skills (languages, frameworks), soft skills (leadership, mentoring), or projects you would like to complete.

The Techrangers Lead and your cohort lead will fill in and submit the rubric to the Associate Department Head of LS&T. If your performance is satisfactory, a wage increase request of $0.50 per hour will be submitted as well. Once the PA has been approved, it will be returned to you to sign. If you have any questions, feel free to schedule a follow-up meeting with the Techrangers Lead or your cohort lead.

Tier 2 Promotion Process

In order to provide some upward mobility in the Techrangers Team, we have implemented a Tier system. Every Techranger is hired as a “Tier 1”, and can be promoted to “Tier 2” if they meet the requirements or already have a Bachelor’s degree. This promotion also comes with an increase of $2.00 per hour.

Promotion Process

If you already have a Bachelor’s degree (or if you earn one during your employment with us), please notify the Techrangers Lead and disregard the steps below. Otherwise:

  1. Read through the Tier 2 Rubric and evaluate your own performance.
  2. If you feel like you are ready to be promoted to Tier 2, notify the Techrangers Lead.
  3. The Techrangers Lead and any cohort leads you have worked with will meet and fill out the rubric.
  4. If you score high enough, your promotion will be submitted along with your next PA.
  5. If you don’t score high enough, the Techrangers Lead will meet with you to go over the areas you need to improve on to score higher next time.
