How to Change your NID Password
UCF requires periodic NID password changes for students, faculty, and staff. If you are a UCF student, you have probably changed your NID password countless times, but the procedure you must use as an employee is different.
It’s important to change your password using the proper procedure in order to prevent your login keychain password from becoming out of sync with your NID password. Mac OS uses “keychains” to hold all of your saved passwords and other sensitive data, and the password that “unlocks” your keychains is the same as your login password. When you change your NID password with the NID password reset website, Mac OS doesn’t know about that change unless you manually tell it.
It’s also important to do this before your password expires, which would force you to use the NID password reset website.
Changing Your Password the Right Way
- Log in to your laptop with your NID and NID password
- Connect to VPN.
- On your computer, navigate to System Preferences->Users and Groups and click “Change Password…”
- Follow the prompts.
- Your NID password is now changed.
What if my password is already expired, or I changed it the wrong way?
If you changed your password using any other method than the one described above, all is not lost! Follow these steps to re-sync your login keychain password and your NID password:
- Try signing in to your computer with your new password. If it works, skip to step 5.
- If that doesn’t work, sign in to your computer with your old password.
- Connect to VPN.
- Log out of your computer and log back in with your new password.
- If you are prompted to update your login keychain password, follow the prompts, using your old and new NID passwords.
- If you are not prompted, follow Apple’s instructions to update your login keychain password.
- If you need help, or you run into any requests for an admin password, contact your supervisor.
