Your First Day

Welcome to your first day at LS&T! Getting started at a new job is always exciting. Learning what goes where and who does what takes a little while. Meet people, take your time, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Say Hello

First, follow the instructions for setting up Slack.

Introduce yourself in Slack in the #lst-all channel. This channel is private. If you cannot see it, please ask a full-timer to add you to the appropriate Slack group (@techrangers-team for part-timers and @full-timers-lst for full-timers). Your sign-in to Slack should be connected to your employee email. Ask your trainer or supervisor if you have any questions.

We want to know who you are. Embrace the emoji. Here’s a few ideas:

  • @channel Hello everyone!
  • Describe a favorite project.
  • What’s your favorite programming language so far.
  • Have pets? Feel free to describe them with intense detail.
  • Hobbies? Common or obscure, people love these.
  • Is a hotdog a sandwich? Think about it. It’s important.
  • Tell us something weird or interesting about you. EX: “I totalled my car on the Nürburgring” or “My dad saved me from choking on a fire ball when I was a child using the Heimlich maneuver” (yes, those are both real examples).

Depending on who’s around and how busy they are, it may take a while to get some responses. Sometimes it’s a tide of jibber jabber, sometimes its a old western with a tumbleweed blowing by in the distance. Don’t take it personally if it’s a little quiet. Feel free to spend some time here responding to everyone.

Schedule a 1:1 with your supervisor

This is just a 15 minute “getting to know you” meeting. Your boss can answer any questions you may have. You can suggest using Slack’s call feature in a direct message to them.

Establish a Short-term Schedule

Part-timers: We’d love to know when to expect you. The training has a more involved task to set up your schedule, so let’s keep it simple for now. Forecast your work hours for the next 3 days you’ll be working and send those to your supervisor.
